The Spiritual Significance of Circumcision: A Pathway to Divine Connection

Introduction

Circumcision, often viewed merely as a physical rite, carries profound spiritual significance. Beyond the literal practice, it symbolises purification, spiritual awakening, and the detachment from mortal tendencies. This paper aims to explore the deeper meaning of circumcision, as presented in the Bible, and how it serves as a necessary step for entering the divine world of God. Through the act of spiritual circumcision, one is called to shed the impurities of the soul, align with God’s divine law, and experience the transformative power of the divine through meditation and affirmations.

“To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.”

— Jeremiah 6:10 KJV

Key Terms and Definitions

Circumcision: In its spiritual context, circumcision refers to the purification of the heart and soul, signifying the removal of sin and disconnection from worldly desires. It is the act of cutting away the tendencies that separate one from God, ultimately leading to spiritual growth and alignment with divine law.

Circumcised: A person who is opened and receptive to the ideas of God. One who has cut away and discarded all of the desires of the lower canal mind for the desires of the highest mind. One who is no longer ruled by the desires of the flesh, the physical needs of life but by the Holy Spirit. One who now understands and holds the laws and wisdoms of the Divine.

Uncircumcised: Not yet opened, receptive to the Truth. A person who hasn’t cut away or discarded all of the desires of the lower canal mind. A person ruled by the desires of the flesh, the physical needs of life. One who is ignorant and doesn’t understand or hold the laws and wisdoms of the Divine and is busy living life from his/her own ideas—lacking spiritual guidance.

The Flesh: Refers not only to the physical body but also symbolises the ego, earthly desires, and sinful tendencies that bind the individual to materialism and separation from God. It’s the mortal consciousness expressing itself through appetite. It is overcome by denying that appetite is physical and by affirming it to be spiritual.

The Heart: Is the centre of the subconscious mind. It represents the core of a person’s being—where thoughts, intentions, and the soul’s desires manifest. Purification of the heart is a crucial aspect of spiritual circumcision.

Spiritual Purification: The process of cleansing the mind and soul from sin (lack of divine understanding), ego, and earthly attachments, thereby making space for divine presence and alignment with God’s will.

Divine Law: The inherent laws and principles of God, governing the order of the universe and the moral conduct of humankind. Adherence to divine law leads to spiritual harmony and unity with God. Simply put, God’s Love.

New Creation in Christ: The transformation that occurs when an individual, through spiritual circumcision, after cutting away fleshy—unrealistic desires, sheds the old self and becomes a new being, fully aligned with God’s divine purpose.

Sin: The falling short of, lack of understanding of the divine law and order leading to self-inflicted sufferings.

Biblical Foundation of Circumcision

Circumcision, as presented in the Bible, holds a deeper spiritual meaning beyond the outward physical act. It is a symbol of the purification process—an essential step for spiritual growth and connection to God. It’s the act of cutting away, removal, detachment from; symbolically, the cutting off of mortal tendencies, and is indicative of purification and cleanliness of the inner soul and mind. Under the law of Jesus Christ, circumcision is fulfilled by the purification of the individual from the law of sin (falling short of, lack of understanding of the divine law and order), and death (a discord in the mind caused by sin, which produces a separation between spirit and body—a prolonged sleep).

One is circumcised in the true inner significance of the word only by being thoroughly purified in soul. Then the glory of the inner soul cleansing and purifying works out into the outer consciousness and the body and sets one free from all sensual, corruptible thoughts and activities. Thus, man becomes a new creature in Christ, he manifests wholeness and perfection throughout his/her being.

Uncircumcision, on the other hand, is the state of remaining unpurified, spiritually disconnected, or separated from the divine law and understanding. To remain in uncircumcision is to remain bound by the flesh and the world, unaware or resistant to the higher divine calling.

The Bible presents various verses warning about the dangers of being uncircumcised in a spiritual sense. These verses illuminate the idea of being spiritually blind and disconnected from God’s divine law.

Key Scriptures on Circumcision

Romans 2:28-29 (KJV)

“For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”

Interpretation

This passage highlights that the true significance of circumcision lies not in the outward physical act but in the inward transformation of the heart (centre of the subconscious). Spiritual circumcision is about purifying the heart and aligning it with divine law, not about conforming to outward rituals of the flesh.

Deuteronomy 10:16 (KJV)

“Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiff-necked.”

Interpretation

In this verse, God commands His people to circumcise their hearts, symbolising the removal of stubbornness and rebellion. Spiritual circumcision requires humility and a willingness to let go of ego and sin, making room for divine guidance.

Jeremiah 4:4 (KJV)

“Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.”

Interpretation

Here, Jeremiah calls for the people to remove the “foreskin” (blockages from receiving God) of their hearts by cutting away unpurified desires; indicating the need for a radical purification of the soul. Without this purification, individuals remain trapped in sin and separation from God.

Colossians 2:11 (KJV)

“In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ.”

Interpretation

In this verse, Paul explains that true circumcision is achieved through Christ (being anointed by God), which removes the sins of the flesh and purifies the soul. Through Christ, believers experience an inward circumcision that frees them from sin and aligns them with divine law.

Philippians 3:3 (KJV)

“For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”

Interpretation

This verse emphasises that true circumcision is not about physical rituals, but about worshipping God in spirit and truth, which is done through meditation. It is a call to disconnect from the flesh—the ego and worldly desires—and to live in alignment with the divine will.

Uncircumcision

Leviticus 26:41 (KJV)

“And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:”

Interpretation:

God warns that those who remain uncircumcised in heart, those lacking spiritual understanding and guidance, will face consequences. He offers redemption through humility and repentance. To circumcise the heart means to cut away all of the ideas of physical-fleshy aspects, the pride, the rejection of truth, and the lack of divine understanding—sin, returning to obedience and divine favour.

Ezekiel 44:9 (KJV)

“Thus saith the Lord God; No stranger, uncircumcised in heart, nor uncircumcised in flesh, shall enter into my sanctuary, of any stranger that is among the children of Israel.”

Interpretation:

God explicitly states that no one who remains attached to the physical desires of life, lacking spiritual understanding and guidance (uncircumcised in heart and flesh) can enter His sanctuary (meaning the Highest Divine Consciousness). This emphasises that both spiritual and physical purification are necessary to be in the presence of God.

Ezekiel 44:7 (KJV)

“In that ye have brought into my sanctuary strangers, uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, to pollute it, even my house, when ye offer my bread, the fat and the blood, and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations.”

Interpretation:

This verse condemns the defilement of God’s holy place by those who remain spiritually and physically impure and try to pass their emotions for spirit. Polluting the mind represents unpurified thoughts, meaning one must purify themselves before they can truly offer sacrifices and be part of divine communion.

1 Maccabees 2:45-48 (KJV)

“Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars: and what children soever they found within the coast of Israel uncircumcised, those they circumcised valiantly. They pursued also after the proud men, and the work prospered in their hand. So they recovered the law out of the hand of the Gentiles, and out of the hand of kings, neither suffered they the sinner to triumph.”

Interpretation:

This verse illustrates the restoration of divine law by purging impurity. Mattathias, meaning the gift of God, and his followers circumcised those who were not circumcised, signifying God’s intervention to purify the mind and body, a return to God’s covenant.

Joshua 5:7 (KJV)

“And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.”

Interpretation:

Joshua ensured that the new generation was circumcised, re-establishing the covenant with God. This underscores that every generation, or thoughts in the mind, must actively uphold divine law, cutting away impurities to walk in righteousness and divine favour.

1 Samuel 17:36 (KJV)

“Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.”

Interpretation:

David describes Goliath, who represents the toughest obstacles we face on earth, as uncircumcised, symbolising that Goliath is outside of God’s covenant and divine protection. This highlights that true strength and victory come from alignment with God, not physical might.

The Spiritual Importance of Circumcision

The spiritual significance of circumcision is rooted in the purification of the soul. It is an act of cutting away the impurities, the desires of the flesh, and all that separates an individual from God. Circumcision symbolises the removal of sin and ego, leaving the soul pure and ready to align with divine law.

Purification of the Soul:

Circumcision is about spiritual purification, where one sheds the impurities of sin, ego, and worldly attachments. Through this process, the individual is cleansed and made pure, enabling the divine presence to dwell within and guide the soul. It represents acknowledgment and understanding of the Divine principles of life.

Detachment from Mortal Tendencies:

Circumcision calls for detachment from the temporal desires of the flesh—desires that bind the individual to the material world and away from divine consciousness. By cutting away these tendencies, one becomes more receptive to spiritual enlightenment and alignment with God’s law.

The New Creation in Christ:

When an individual undergoes spiritual circumcision, they become a “new creation” in Christ, who represents the anointed life in the highest order, the essence of God. This transformation allows one to manifest wholeness, purity, and divine alignment in every aspect of their being. The old self—marked by sin and ego—is cast away, and the individual is reborn into spiritual purity.

The Time to Cut Away Is Now

The time to undergo spiritual circumcision is now. As we live in a world filled with distractions and temptations, the call to purify the heart and soul is more urgent than ever. Circumcision is not just an ancient ritual; it is a divine instruction for all humanity, a prerequisite for entering into the fullness of God’s divine world.

Conclusion

Circumcision, when understood in its spiritual context, is an essential step in the journey towards divine connection. It is the act of purifying the heart, detaching from worldly desires, and aligning with God’s divine law. While the outward ritual is no longer necessary under the law of Jesus Christ, the spiritual essence of circumcision remains a vital practice for all who seek to live in harmony with the divine.

The time to cut away from sin, ego, and the mortal tendencies of the flesh is now. Through this spiritual purification, we become new creations in Christ, manifesting wholeness, divine alignment, and eternal connection to God. Meditate! Meditate! Meditate!
